Writing a book is on the project list for hundreds of individuals. Story ideas flow wild, outlines develop, chapters start, and first drafts begin with genuine determination, all to fulfill the dream of being a writer. The real challenge isn’t in starting a writing project, it’s the finishing of the thing.
Unfortunately, many people start out strong but then struggle with motivation or their first wave of inspirational flow becomes blocked. Not long after, the exciting feeling of writing wanes and progress on the story becomes less and less.
The struggle is in finishing
The aspiring writer ends up setting the partial manuscript aside; promising to return to it when they get the inspiration they need to complete the work, or as time permits. They struggle with finishing what began with so much earnest. Why? Because writing is hard work and takes discipline.
If you are a writer who started a manuscript and set it aside, you might think your dream is dead. We’re saying, yes—it may appear it’s all over… except the finishing of the thing.
Opportunity still exists
True, the time between when you started your story and now is time lost, but, opportunity still exists to finish your manuscript. You wanted to be a writer, setting your story aside doesn’t have to be the end of your dream, it’s just a slight detour along the way.
You can start again
Our point? You can start again, and again, if you need to, and you still have time to get it done. Even if your progress is slow and limited. How long should you keep trying? Until it’s done; keep at it until it’s finished. Don’t be afraid of the hard part. The discipline necessary to be a writer takes practice.
We believe your story matters and we hope you find the inspiration you need to pick your story up and begin again!
